On the Shoulders of a Giant: Giovanni Sartori, Political Scientist
Abstract
The keynote speech will focus on the contributions by Giovanni Sartori to political science. Examples will be drawn selectively from his study of democracy, analysis of parties and party systems, concept formation, comparative method and constitutional engineering. The speech will highlight the major innovations introduced by Sartori and will focus on the differences to be drawn between Sartori and his contemporaries and on the inadequacies of today’s political scientists. Throughout an attempt will be made to suggest the importance of applied political science for the acquisition of valid and falsifiable political knowledge.
